Let It Go
Zig Ziglar, a beloved encourager and inspirer, once said, “The first step to getting what you want is having the courage to get rid of what you don’t!” Respect yourself, respect your space, respect your belongings. If you feel bogged down or distracted by your belongings in your home, let it go. If your belongings become an impediment to daily life, let it go. If you don’t have the space to properly house your belongings, let it go. If your belongings go unused, let it go. If something no longer serves a purpose or brings you joy, let it go.
Letting go of things isn't always easy. You may have an emotional attachment to items and struggle with letting go. You may feel a sense of guilt or responsibility to keep things. You may have a fear of letting go because of an anticipated future need. If you find yourself struggling with this, it may help to enlist a friend to hold you accountable and to give you the courage and support to let it go.
When you are ready, use these questions to help you sort and edit your belongings to determine what to keep, donate or toss:
- Do I use it regularly?
- If not, do I love it?
- Am I keeping out of obligation or expectation?
- Am I holding onto because I think I should love it?
- Am I saving just in case?
- Do I have multiples of the same thing?
- Could something else I own serve the same purpose?
- Am I holding onto a broken item to repair one day?
- Is the item worth the time I spend cleaning/ storing it?
- Could I use this space for something else?
